A Way Through is an intimate, figurative work centred on a sense of passage and movement. Multiple figures emerge from a dense, earthy ground of deep burgundy and warm cream — some reaching, some resting, some barely visible within the layers — as though caught in the act of finding their way forward.

The warmth of the restrained palette draws the forms together, creating a sense of unity within the complexity. There is weight here, but also tenderness; the figures appear to move through the layers together.

A way through carries a quiet intensity, inviting the viewer to pause and look closely.

Joanna Lovatt

With more than 20 years working in fashion and specialising in pattern making, Joanna brings a love of line, form and texture to her intuitive painting practice. Her work explores the space between structure and spontaneity.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Each piece is created by Joanna using archival materials and an intuitive, layered approach to painting. Working with oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, she builds texture through expressive marks, layering, scraping and reworking.

The result is a collection of original works with depth, character and subtle variations that reflect the handmade nature of each piece.

Each artwork is an original piece created and signed by Joanna Lovatt and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Shipping & Delivery

For delivery within New Zealand, artworks are carefully packaged and shipped unframed on their stretcher bars, ready to hang or frame.

For international delivery, artworks are carefully removed from their stretcher bars, rolled and securely packaged in a protective tube for safe transport. The artwork can then be re-stretched and framed locally on arrival.
