Off the Bias is a playful yet sophisticated work that delights in form and colour. Fluid, ribbon-like shapes curl and tumble across the canvas, with creamy white edges traced in charcoal against a warm ground of golden ochre, burnt sienna and fiery red. Organic and graphic elements sit alongside one another, creating a sense of energy across the surface.

The title draws quietly from the language of pattern cutting, where the bias establishes a particular direction through cloth. Here, Off The Bias suggests a departure from that line, a shift away from the expected. It reflects tension between precision and intuition, and what can emerge when established structures are allowed to loosen.

Off the Bias is joyful, assured and full of character, revealing something new with every look.

Each piece is created by Joanna using archival materials and an intuitive, layered approach to painting. Working with oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, she builds texture through expressive marks, layering, scraping and reworking.

The result is a collection of original works with depth, character and subtle variations that reflect the handmade nature of each piece.

Your original Joanna Lovatt painting is a one-of-a-kind artwork. Caring for it properly will help preserve its beauty and integrity for many years to come.

Each finished work is sealed with a high-quality, UV-resistant archival varnish, helping to protect the surface and preserve the vibrancy of the artwork over time.

Please read the following care guidelines to help ensure the lasting preservation of your original artwork.

Handling

Minimise handling wherever possible. Always carry your painting by holding the stretcher bars or outer frame (if framed), rather than the canvas itself. Avoid touching the painted surface directly, as natural oils from your skin can leave marks. When placing or resting the painting, ensure the surface is clean, dry and cushioned. Never lay the artwork face-down.

Sunlight Exposure

Although sealed with a protective, UV-resistant archival varnish, your painting should not be hung in direct sunlight. Over time, even durable pigments can be affected by prolonged exposure to harsh light. Choose a position away from strong, direct sunlight wherever possible.

Environment

Original paintings are best displayed in areas with a stable temperature and humidity. Avoid hanging near sources of moisture, such as bathrooms or kitchens, and keep away from direct airflow from heaters or air-conditioning units. Significant fluctuations in humidity and temperature can affect the canvas and stretcher over time.

Select a low-traffic location to help avoid accidental bumps or scratches, and hang your painting at a safe elevation away from small children and pets.

Cleaning

Never use water, solvents or cleaning products on your painting. To remove light surface dust, use a clean, soft-bristle artist’s brush with very gentle pressure. Avoid rubbing the surface or attempting to remove stubborn marks yourself. If your artwork requires more substantial cleaning, seek professional conservation advice.

Storage & Transport

If you need to store or transport your original painting, protect the painted surface with suitable archival materials such as glassine before adding additional protective wrapping. Avoid placing plastic directly against the painted surface, as it can trap moisture.

Store artwork in a dry, climate-controlled environment, ideally upright rather than flat. For longer-term storage or transport, a sturdy art box or professionally constructed crate can provide additional protection and prevent pressure or accidental damage to the canvas.

With thoughtful care, your original Joanna Lovatt painting can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Each artwork is an original piece created and signed by Joanna Lovatt and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
